Meet Maria

"Every person carries a story shaped by their culture, their experiences, and the world around them. I believe good therapy begins with genuinely understanding that story."

Hi, I'm Maria, a student therapist completing my practicum placement at Healthy Minds Psychotherapy. I am currently pursuing a Master of Education in Counselling Psychology at the University of Toronto, under the clinical supervision of Katharine De Santos. I also hold a Specialized Honours Bachelor of Science in Psychology from York University, where I graduated with First Class Standing.

Before entering counselling training, I worked as a psychometrist at Baycrest and in private practice, conducting neuropsychological assessments for clients navigating cognitive concerns, dementia, and neurological conditions. That clinical foundation gave me a deep respect for the complexity of the mind and a genuine comfort sitting with clients through uncertain and vulnerable experiences.

I also bring experience supporting individuals living with mental illness through housing support work, and I have spent years volunteering with the Hispanic community, helping people navigate life transitions and connect with resources. That work shaped who I am as a clinician: someone who believes that culture, identity, and lived experience are not background details but central to the therapeutic process.

I work from a trauma-informed, culturally responsive approach and have a particular interest in supporting clients with trauma, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, and addiction concerns. My approach is warm, curious, and collaborative. I want to understand your world before I offer anything about it.

Therapeutic Approach

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Trauma-Informed Therapy

  • Cognitive Therapy

  • Critical Multi-cultural Practice

  • Person-Centred Therapy

  • Strength Based Approach

Outside the Therapy Room

Outside of her clinical work, Maria is deeply engaged in her community. She has spent years volunteering with the Hispanic community through her church, offering emotional support and helping newcomers find their footing in a new country. She is also a researcher at heart, having presented her work at academic conferences and contributed to studies on memory, cognition, and criminal psychology. When she is not studying or seeing clients, you will likely find her somewhere between a research paper and a good conversation.
