Family Therapy
Family relationships are some of the most complex and meaningful in our lives. They can be a source of deep support and belonging, and at times, a source of real pain, disconnection, or conflict that is hard to resolve without outside help.
At Healthy Minds Psychotherapy, family therapy sessions may be incorporated into the therapeutic process when it would be clinically meaningful to do so. These sessions provide a structured and professionally guided space for family members to come together, examine shared patterns, and begin building more constructive ways of relating.
How Family Therapy Works at Healthy Minds
Family therapy at Healthy Minds is typically offered as part of an existing individual therapeutic relationship, rather than as a standalone service. Family sessions are introduced when a client and their therapist have identified that including one or more family members could support the goals of the work.
This reflects an important clinical principle: family sessions are most productive when they are embedded in a thoughtful therapeutic process, with a clear purpose and a therapist who already understands the relational context. It is not a first appointment. It is a purposeful extension of work that is already underway.
If you are seeking family therapy as a starting point and do not currently have an individual therapist at Healthy Minds, we encourage you to begin with an individual intake. From there, your therapist can assess whether family sessions would be a helpful and appropriate part of your process.
What Family Therapy Addresses
Family sessions can be helpful when there is a need to:
Improve communication between family members who are struggling to feel heard or understood
Address recurring conflict or tension within the family system
Support a family member who is dealing with a significant mental health challenge or life transition
Adjust to a major change such as a health diagnosis, a bereavement, separation or divorce, blended family dynamics, or a move
Explore how family-of-origin patterns are affecting current relationships across generations
Strengthen connection in families dealing with distance or estrangement
Support a child or adolescent who is struggling, within the context of the broader family system
What to Expect
Family sessions are structured and guided by your therapist. Each person in the room is given space to share their perspective, and the therapist works to help family members listen to each other in new ways, rather than simply responding to what they expect to hear.
Sessions focus on patterns within the system, not on identifying blame or assigning fault. The goal is to increase understanding, reduce reactivity, and develop more effective and connected ways of communicating.
Family sessions may be offered as a defined short series, for example four to six sessions around a specific issue, or as a recurring part of an ongoing therapeutic process, depending on what makes sense clinically.
Our Approach
Our therapists bring a systems-informed lens to family work, meaning they look at the family as an interconnected whole rather than focusing on any one individual as the problem. Approaches used in family therapy at Healthy Minds include:
Family Systems Therapy: understanding relational dynamics, roles, and intergenerational patterns
Narrative Therapy: helping families examine and revise the stories they tell about themselves and each other
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills: building communication and emotional regulation across the family
Trauma-Informed approaches: recognizing when family dynamics have been shaped by difficult experiences
Humanistic and Client-Centred Therapy: prioritizing the dignity and experience of each person in the room
A Note on Confidentiality in Family Sessions
When multiple family members attend a session together, confidentiality operates differently than in individual therapy. Your therapist will discuss how information shared in family sessions is handled, and what remains confidential to each individual, before you begin. We take these conversations seriously and approach them with care.

IN-PERSON OR VIRTUAL
INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOTHERAPY
-
Individual Psychotherapy provides a safe and private space for you to share your thoughts and feelings with an involved, objective, and professional therapist. It's an opportunity to explore confusing and often painful interpersonal and emotional experiences, gaining new perspectives that lead to positive changes in your life.
Many of us have assumptions and beliefs about ourselves and others that we don't often examine. These beliefs can lead us to counterproductive and unhappy cycles of interaction, making it difficult to break free from vicious circles. Through psychotherapeutic exploration, you can discover your potential for positive change in how you think, feel, and interact with others, gaining control of your life and breaking free from negative patterns.
IN-PERSON OR VIRTUAL
GROUP PSYCHOTHERAPY
-
We offer small scheduled structured group psychotherapy sessions (6-10 clients) focusing on various issues. It offers a sense of belonging, reduces isolation, and promotes personal growth through feedback, encouragement, and social learning. Group therapy can improve communication and interpersonal skills, increase self-awareness, and empower individuals to become more resilient.
CLINICAL SUPERVISION
-
Whether you're just starting out in your career or looking to enhance your existing practice, clinical supervision can help you achieve your goals and take your practice to the next level. Our clinic director can work closely with you to guide you through complex cases, offer feedback and support, and help you develop your clinical skills. Through regular supervision, you can gain new insights, expand your knowledge base, and build your confidence as a practitioner.
